DESPICABLE Dallas gunman Micah Johnson who murdered five officers at a Black Lives Matter rally wanted to be a police officer himself according to his mother.

Delphine Johnson said her son became "gung-ho" and joined the Army after he graduated from high school, but returned to the US disillusioned after his tour in Afghanistan.

The despondent mother said Johnson turned into a "hermit" following nearly six years of military service, which included a seven-month spell in Afghanistan.

She added: "He was a good son. But the military was not what Micah thought it would be. He was very disappointed, very disappointed.

"It may be that the ideal that he thought of our government, what he thought the military represented, it just didn’t live up to his expectations."

Johnson's parents divorced when he was just four years old, but appeared united following the death of their son. (Read more >>)
